THE Government's financial inspectors have given Lewisham Council a glowing report.
The district auditor scrutinises councils to make sure their finances are in order. After a rigorous inspection last October, Lewisham Council was given a resounding vote of confidence.
The council was praised for being a leading authority in progressing the e-government agenda and for developing an innovative performance management system.
The report states: "The council has set itself demanding targets and has developed a culture that embraces challenge and innovation in the delivery of modern services responsive to the needs of local citizens."
Lewisham Council's chief executive Barry Quirk CBE said: "This is excellent news for the whole borough, it means people can be assured the council is carrying out its work in a responsible manner and achieving excellent value for money.
"The job in hand now is to build on these findings."
