THIS was a great win for the Blues but the performance was not up to scratch, with both teams failing to impress on this chilly afternoon.

Both sides contributed to a scrappy first 30 minutes with miss-hit passes flying here, there and everywhere, Steve Brown being the worst offender.

On 19 minutes Darren Currie showed great skill to carve open the Cambridge defence but the finish was one that would have scored three points in a rugby union game. Perhaps Wasps should come to Adams Park!

Two minutes later Andy Duncan put his header wide of the Wycombe goal much to the relief of Martin Taylor. This chance obviously boosted the away side and as Cambridge attacked, Wycombe were forced into making silly mistakes.

Wycombe then went on a rare counter attack but Jermaine McSporran only scooped the ball over the crossbar. Still Cambridge pressured but their inability to hit the target became apparent as chance after chance was wasted.

In the 36th minute, Wycombe went on a counter attack with Michael Simpson, whose run was ended by Ian Ashbee. But the ball fell to Wycombe's McSporran, whose bullet shot hit the crossbar and bounced off the line. The ball eventually fell to stand-in striker Keith Ryan, whose shot was adjudged to have crossed the line much to the disgust of Lynol Perez, the Cambridge keeper.

For the first time this season Wycombe were not good value for their lead and they looked uncomfortable.

In the 44th minute the lead was doubled by McSporran whose powerful curling shot found the back of the net.

At the beginning of the second half Jason Cousins replaced Paul McCarthy who had been suffering after an earlier knock.

Then in the 53rd minute, the 6560 supporters were plunged into darkness for the second time this season as the floodlights failed, causing an eight-minute delay.

This delay seemed to be the boost Wycombe needed and when the teams re-appeared from the changing rooms, the side looked much better and Cambridge appeared to have no chance of getting back into the game.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, Daniel Chillingworth fired a volley into orbit much to the delight of the home supporters.

As the game came to an end the crowd started to leave the ground and by the end very few people were left to applaud the teams' efforts. Wycombe can now enjoy Christmas comfortably sitting in line for the play-offs but with trips to Chesterfield and QPR ahead, Wycombe must improve their performances if they want to remain contenders for promotion.
