AN OUTRAGED widower has accepted a £10,000 compensation payout from Bromley Hospital following the death of his wife.

David Amos, of Marberley Road, Beckenham, had vowed to launch legal proceedings against the hospital when his wife died after a routine endoscopy operation. But despite remaining furious by what he claims to have been a series of “catastrophic blunders” made by the hospital, he has decided not to pursue legal action.

He said: “I still feel the offer was an insult to the memory of my wife, but I didn't want to go through a long court case, as this isn't what she would have wanted.

“There has to be a time when you just get on with your life. So I have agreed to accept the pay out.

“I am still annoyed at the mistakes made at the hospital and its version of events. That certainly doesn't go away. But I have had time to think and this seems the best way to move forward.”

Multiple sclerosis sufferer Pamela Amos, 63, died on March 6 from internal bleeding after a small artery was damaged during the endoscopy.

Mr Amos, 59, was disgusted and angry when Bromley NHS Trust offered him the £10,000 compensation.

He says the compensation is made up of a £7,500 statutory payout for this type of case with a further £2,500 for damages.

Refusing to comment on the compensation offer, a Bromley NHS Trust spokesman said: “As this matter is subject to legal proceedings, we do not consider it appropriate to comment at this time.”

The former chauffeur is now determined to get on with his life and is hoping to return to work.

He added: “I had to give up work three years ago to look after Pam after her condition deteriorated. But I am now hoping to get back into driving.”
