IT will be celebration time in Erith on September 1, when building starts on a new town health centre.

The town forum intends to make it a local celebration attended by prominent figures such as Bexley Mayor Aileen Beckwith and MP John Austin.

Clowns, street entertainers and other activities are also planned for the ground breaking.

This is the first new health centre to be built in Bexley after plans were drawn up by the health authority six years ago.

The new centre will offer medical and support services to 30,000 people with GP practices, specialist therapies and a drug and alcohol service. The project nearly collapsed last year when it failed to get approval as a Private Finance Initiative, but was rescued by regional health funds.
