REVELLERS caused havoc over the Bank Holiday Weekend in two separate incidents, leading councillors to call for action to crack down on drunken behaviour.

Des Knowles, Amersham Town Clerk and Cllr Martin King told a meeting of Amersham Town Council on Monday that drunken rowdiness could not be tolerated in the town.

Mr Knowles said unruly party goers had caused havoc over the bank holiday weekend when barbecues were held on the King George V playing fields, Amersham, and Westwood Park, Little Chalfont.

He said people had smashed bottles into the ground, including beer and whisky bottles.

Mr Knowles said of the playing fields in Amersham: "We cleared up on Saturday after Friday night, Sunday after Saturday night and Monday after Sunday night. On Tuesday we spent four hours on hands and knees getting out glass and two dozen bottles which had been worked into the ground.

"It is insane behaviour and mindless."

He added that parents should be vigilant when their children were playing on the fields because of the shards of glass.

Councillor King told the meeting how revellers outside the Nags Head pub in Whielden Street were loud, and smashed glasses on Monday evening.

Cllr King said he had been alerted by residents after they said that noise outside the pub was upsetting neighbours.

He said: "I was down by the memorial gardens and I heard bottles being smashed on two or three occasions. People are very, very loud. It is not in the pub, it is after.

"I find Nobby a very strong landlord and he can't be held responsible when it is in the street. They should have more respect."

When asked if he thought the town is going into a decline, Cllr King said: "I think if we don't step on it now, it will do."

Nobby Lucas, manager of the Nags Head, said: "I am not just a publican but a neighbour too. If people leave the pub and cause havoc in the street, it is out of our jurisdiction. If we do know, we kick them out of the pub. We are with the pub watch scheme. We do get blamed for a lot of wrong doing in the area."

Cllr Josie Ricketts, former mayor of Amersham, said: "It's horrifying. Last night I came back from the meeting and saw people heading down to the skate park with a crate of drink. They were young teenagers and I am sure they were underage.

"I am not happy it never used to be like this."

Police confirmed last week that the skate park has been used as a meeting point for underage drinkers.
