A PILOT programme to clean up Greenwich borough received more than 400 calls in its first two weeks.
The Street Champions scheme and Cleansweep hotline, which focused initially on the Woolwich Common neighbourhood renewal area, was launched in July.
Under the scheme, each street in the area was allocated a champion who acts as a direct link between residents and the council regarding any environmental problems.
Delighted resident Jim Broad, of Ritter Street, had a long-standing problem with a blocked drain but two days after calling the hotline it was cleared.
He said: “I previously reported it but nothing seemed to happen. When I called I wasn't expecting too much, but I was pleasantly surprised.”
Council leader Councillor Chris Roberts said the scheme's success depends on residents and the council working together to restore local pride.
Residents living in the pilot area can report problems on 020 8921 4661. Queries will then be passed on to the relevant council department.
