THE TORY election campaign in Gravesham received a boost over the weekend from a Conservative heavyweight.

Shadow home secretary and Maidstone MP Ann Widdecombe stood side-by-side with Tory candidate Jacques Arnold in Gravesend town centre.

Addressing shoppers from Mr Arnold's famous soapbox, Miss Widdecombe fielded questions on law and order and asylum.

Mr Arnold, who has known Miss Widdecombe for 30 years, said: “She took the town centre by storm and was very supportive.

“She praised my loyalty for sticking with Gravesham rather than opting to fight a safe seat.

“It was a good, old-style election meeting”.

At a packed meeting of party supporters in Meopham Village Hall on Sunday, Miss Widdecombe blasted Labour's plans for prevention orders and kitemarks to tackle internet paedophiles.

Miss Widdecombe told the audience: “I charge them with dereliction of duty. They are obviously now in a panic realising we have proposals in our manifesto to tackle this scourge and they do not.”

Other candidates who have declared are Chris Pond (Labour) Bruce Parmenter (Liberal Democrat) and Bill Jenner (UK Independence).
