MEmbers of the Sharks Swimming Club, which specialises in coaching disabled competitors and those with special needs, came home from the Guildford Gala with a superb medal haul, as well as a special shield for being the club with the highest number of points and three individual awards.

Erith's Jamie Rushbrook led the way for those members who live locally.

He won a gold in the breaststroke, two silvers in the individual and freestyle relay races, plus a bronze in the medley relay, while his sister, Tina, won a bronze in the breaststroke.

Three others from Erith also came home with medals.

Sarah-Louise Casey won silvers in the breaststroke and freestyle, Matthew Griffiths went one better by winning gold in the freestyle, while Emma Kent claimed a backstroke silver.

Bexley's Jack Conie was a silver medalist in the freestyle, while Sidcup's Samantha Mercer won a silver in the breaststroke and a backstroke bronze.

Iain Ambrose, from Swanley, took silver in his freestyle relay race, plus bronzes in both the individual freestyle and medley relay.

But spare a throught for Katherine Mannion. She swam superbly in a very tough race and just missed out on a medal in fourth place.

All the individual races were swam over one-length.

The Sharks Swimming Club, based at the Eric Liddell Sports Centre in Mottingham, meets on Monday evenings and encourages people with any kind of disability to join.
