A BEXLEYHEATH resident has accused Bexley Council of misleading her over traffic calming measures.

Joyce Corbett, of Bedonwell Road, Bexleyheath says she was given the brush-off by Bexley Council, which told her a thorough study of the area by traffic watchdog Babtie had found it to be the safest place to put an island.

After plans for the traffic islands were announced late last year Mrs Corbett complained to the council it would present a potentially fatal traffic hazard.

The council agreed with her and said it would move it to a safer part of the road.

But when Mrs Corbett came back from holiday at the end of February, the traffic island had been placed in its original position, making it impossible for her to get to her driveway.

She has already narrowly avoided one accident and claims she suffers almost constant abuse from other drivers. Mrs Corbett said: “It's absolutely ridiculous, I will be the first to admit there needs to be some sort of traffic restriction because Bedonwell is a busy road.

“But I was misled by the council which reassured me it understood my position and would make the changes.

“The assistant engineer, John Crump, even came round and told us it was a tight squeeze to get into my driveway. He said he would try and get the traffic island moved into Stapleton Road so as to ease the pressure on my driveway. But that did not happen”

A spokesman for Bexley Council said: “It was a road safety scheme. The audit was carried out after a number of accidents in the area. We have done all we can to make it acceptable to residents.

The size has been changed to make it smaller and it was repositioned. Mrs Corbett was consulted and was aware of it and we have done all we can.”
