A 43-year-old Caterham woman is celebrating this week after raising more than £3,000 for two London hospitals by completing a gruelling cycling challenge through Turkey.

Shelley Eccleston, from Harestone Hill, is still totting up the final total of sponsorship from her seven-day, 380km expedition, which she completed on November 4.

The mother-of-three, an operations director, cycled from Gallipoli to Selcuk along with 50 other women in aid of the Research Centre for Family Health at the Hammersmith and Queen Charlotte's Hospitals.

Shelley, who lives with her husband of 16 years, Roy, and children Fitzroy, 12, Stephanie, 10, and five-year-old Harry, originally hoped to raise £2,000 for the £750,000 target.

But overwhelming sponsorship has meant that saddle-sore Shelley is now looking at a sum of more than £3,200.

Her impressive sponsorship total is not the only thing Shelley has to be proud of.

The determined cyclist also holds the award for the most spectacular dismount during the challenge - over the handlebars head first.
