ST ALBANS' new cinema development was finally given the go-ahead by district councillors on Wednesday, September 19.
After years of planning and debating the issue, members elected to take the plunge and give their backing to the plans submitted by developers Simons Estates at a meeting of the full council.
But the decision-making was not without controversy, as Tory councillors insisted the Bricket Wood development could become the district council's very own "white elephant".
However, Labour group leader Malcolm MacMillan, told his fellow members: "Stop messing about and start building a cinema."
He said: "We've got the best deal we can get. It's by no means a perfect deal for us and it will cost the council up to £56,000 this year, but if that gets us a cinema it's money well spent."
