A WOMAN from Welwyn Garden City won £10,000 on a radio quiz show on Friday morning by guessing how many beef burgers were sold at a football match.

Mrs Sally Metcalf, 38, of Heronswood Place, gave the correct answer of 471 just after 10am on Chiltern FM, ending the month-long competition. She was presented with a cheque by radio host Darren Lee on Wednesday.

The mother of three said: "It was like birthdays and Christmas all come at once.

"I screamed so loud I nearly deafened everybody. I've never won anything at all."

Listeners had been phoning in for a month, trying to guess how many burgers were sold at Stevenage Borough's pre-season summer friendly with West Ham on July 30.

Mrs Metcalf said: "It was obvious what the answer was it was just a case of whether we could get through."

With host, Darren Lee, taking just one answer per hour the race was on.

Mrs Metcalf said: "Somebody else got through at nine but they got it wrong. We just kept trying and pressing re-dial, and ringing and ringing.

"We tried again and again and luckily it connected I thought, 'Don't drop the phone.'"

As well as some home improvements, such as a shower unit and some special birthday presents for her sons, Scott, 11, Perry, aged eight, and Edward, aged six, Mrs Metcalf is planning a family holiday to Tennessee, USA.

Mrs Metcalf, who is adopted, traced her father, an American airman, in 1997 and the family first visited him a few months ago.

She said: "When we left there were lots of tears we didn't think we could afford to go again for ages.

"We'd scrimped and scraped every penny we could. Now we can go again in the next summer holidays."

Husband Ken, 39, rushed back from his work as a gardener to help the family celebrate when he heard the good news.

She said: "We shared a strong coffee together, as there wasn't anything else in the house to drink.

"One of my best friends doesn't know, as she is still out of the country."

The competition was sponsored by Welwyn Garden City dealership Landrover Diamond.
