ST ALBANS city centre was invaded by television stars, film cameras and a full entourage this week for the filming of a Carlton television drama starring Patricia Routledge from BBC's Keeping Up Appearances.

Shot in the Old Town Hall from Monday until Wednesday, June 20, Anybody's Nightmare is based on the true story of a woman accused of murdering her elderly aunt. Furnished with props and lighting, the hall is set up as the court house where Sheila Bowler, a respectable middle-class piano teacher, pleads her case.

TV producers paid more than £2,000 to use St Albans Town Hall for three days, before returning to the main film set in Rye, Sussex.

London actor Malcolm Sinclair, who has appeared in numerous TV programmes including BBC's Pie In The Sky, could be seen wandering about Market Place in barrister costume.

Acting the part of top barrister Nicholas Parnell, whose real-life counterpart is currently defending Jeffrey Archer, Mr Sinclair said: "St Albans is a lovely place so beautiful. I hope we'll have some time to see more of the city while we're filming."

Anybody's Nightmare is due to be shown on ITV at the end of the year.
