YOUNGSTERS at Sauncey Wood Primary School in Harpenden were given a touch of expert tuition to help them create a special poem.

The Pickford Hill school invited artist in residence Terry Stothard into class last month to help pupils compile their own school poem based on an environmental theme.

Teacher Jackie Stephenson, who organised the event, said the children relished the chance of working with a "real poet" and were looking forward to seeing their finished work encompassed in a school poem.

Mr Stothard's trip to the school was sponsored by the Harpenden Area Decorative and Fine Arts Society, which aims to encourage an appreciation and enjoyment of all arts by primary school children.

The group has already sponsored a sculptor to work in two local schools and funded this latest project in partnership with Eastern Arts.
