BUSHEY ARCHES is to revert back to its pre-roadworks state, with one-way traffic on Chalk HIll and Pinner Road.

Residents in the congested area were asked in a survey if they wanted to see the traffic flow remain in its present two-way state as an experiment.

The results were announced yesterday. Hertfordshire County Council said about 60 per cent of people rejected the idea.

The outcome is similar to The Watford Observer's website poll, with the overwhelming majority stated it would be madness to leave the system as it is.

County Councillor Seamus Quilty welcomed the decision. He said: "The people have clearly spoken."

About 120 letters and questionnaires were sent out with more than 100 replies.

However, some questions remain unanswered. No decision has been taken about when the road system will be returned to normal.

Ironically, National Grid would have returned the flows as soon as its work finished next month.

But, according to a council spokesman, it may not take place until after Christmas.

He said the timing would be determined in conjunction with the police, and suggested it may have safety implications if the one-way system was returned before next year.
