PIPERS Corner School security officer Philip Bratherton's jokes are helping to build a new library in Egypt.

Mr Bratherton, who has been working at the school for two years, did a stand-up show at the school to raise money for The Sunshine Home for Orphaned Children in Luxor, Egypt.

He came across the orphanage when he was on holiday last year and he and his wife, Brenda, asked orphanage staff what they could do to help.

He explained: "We were walking around Luxor and exploring the back streets when we came across the orphanage."

Since then Philip, Brenda, and staff and pupils at the school have raised £8,500 for the orphanage appeal.

Staff and students paid £1 to watch Mr Bratherton sing, dance and tell jokes.

The event raised £260 during the lunch hour before half term week.

The efforts of the school are not going unrewarded.

A library to be built at the orphanage will be named the Pipers Corner School Library.

Mr Bratherton said: "The event went extremely well and we had a happy atmosphere.

"My wife and I get terrific support from the school.

"I talk in assembly every five or six weeks about what is going on and as a result the girls help out and even my own family helps out as well."

He said that staff and pupilsfrequently sponsor him when he takes part in sponsored walks.
