A dozen elderly Addiscombe residents made a protest on Monday about the proposed relocation of a zebra crossing.

They re-enacted the famous Beatles record cover Abbey Road to demonstrate their dependence on the crossing in Lower Addiscombe Road that they use to get to the post office and shops.

Under plans made by developer Bellway Homes, the crossing may be moved about 100 yards east to make way for the entrance to a new housing estate on the site of Addiscombe station.

But Steve Collins, chairman of the Canning and Clyde Residents' Association, said: “They want to put the crossing down near the Alma pub, but that's a Zimmer frame too far for these people.

“We are suggesting that the crossing be displaced a little to outside Portman Cars and the bus stop there be re-sited in a lay-by outside the new development. That would also solve the other problem of buses queuing up and blocking the traffic on Lower Addiscombe Road.”

He said that the other option, to move the crossing west to outside the shops, was not favourable with traders.
