Children join the quest for reel
talent on the dance floor

CHILDREN took centre stage at the Glasgow Music Festival yesterday showcasing their Scottish country dancing skills.

Dance groups from primary schools performed jigs or reels for the judges at Woodside Halls.

A team of 10 pupils from Ardgowan Primary School in Greenock won the Marion B Hamilton Certificate for being top in their class for their performance.

The children are among 7500 performers taking part in the programme of music, dance and speech in the Festival, which is supported by The Herald and runs until March 17. Committee member Forbes Morton said: “As usual the effort and performance is of a high level this year.”

The dancers started the days programme of events and in the afternoon were followed by the modern woodwind and brass solos contest. Flautists, trumpeters, clarinetists and saxophonists performed pieces of 20th or 21st-century music in a modern idiom. In the evening, poetry, speech and reading events were held while the singers performed in the Gilbert and Sullivan solos and “songs from the shows” contest. Songs from a selection of musicals including Evita and Carousel were performed by contestants in the 19-and-over category.
