Salmond urged to drop local tax pledge
ANDY PHILIP
First Minister Alex Salmond faced calls to scrap controversial plans for a new local income tax yesterday.
Labour launched an assault on the SNP's proposal as consultation closed on the proposed replacement to the council tax.
Finance secretary John Swinney unveiled the proposals in March and said the tax, which would be set at 3p in the pound, was the "fairest solution" based on ability to pay.
The idea met with resistance from the CBI, the Institute of Directors and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. The Federation of Small Businesses said it made "bad business sense" and could erode Scotland's competitive edge over England.
The plans were also criticised by the STUC, Unison and the National Union of Students. Labour said the responses were a "damning indictment" of the proposals.
The party's finance spokesman Iain Gray said: "Alex Salmond should listen to what he is being told and dump his unpopular plan."
A spokesman for the Scottish Government said: "Four out of five households would be better or no worse off under a local income tax."

Labour are terrified of this policy as it has caught them in a horrible paradox.
The council tax is deeply unfair and is systematically generating poverty and hardship in this country. But Labour have found themselves forced into the extraordinary position of defending this merciless increase in poverty. They are now terrified that they'll be cursed with its memory the way the Tories are remembered 25 years or more later for the Poll Tax.
It is a mark of their quite extraordinary moral degeneration as a movement that they are wailing and raging to the heavens over the demise of this brutally unfair tax.

On airguns, the father of Andrew Morton, the toddler killed by such a weapon, called for the doubling of prison sentences for those involved. "I don't understand why anyone would want to carry a gun," he said.
Where was Mr Marshall and Labour when the Scottish Government went to Jaqui Smith with their radical ideas regards Air weapons?

I sense incresingly hysterical and desperate tirades from Liebaah Party, The EBC, The Onionist Press and media. The Lie machine is churning out its garbage at an even faster rate now! Do they know something?
At the start of this by election campaign I predicted a Liebaah hold by 5-7,000 votes - I am now revising my position. I suspect that Liebaah is just hanging on now by less than a 2.000 votes. Calling election in Glasgow Fair may just backfire on them?

Council Worker Edinburgh[quote]little tosser glenn campbell with his set up against john mason was a total disgrace.[/quote] I think he felt it balanced by pointing out the Taggart actor was indulging in a bit of self-aggrandisement, rather niaively as it turned out; and there was balance in wondering why Curran's predecessor has used public taxes to subside his house and family, rather than rent a constituency office and employ genuine staff.
But I admit it got very personal when Mason attempted to use the contents of an unseen letter as evidence of Mason's character. I'd say that was inadmissable evidence. Nevertheless, the public are not slow in spotting a foul. It can work in Mason's favour, especially when he so deftly turned it to his advantage.
Thank goodness he didn't pull quotations denigrating Mason off the Internet written by Unionist cyber psychos.

40 minutes into the debate, fair enough format and questions, Mason doing very very well, Curran not so......then I'm afraid downhill.
[bold]Then a hi-jack moment[/bold]
Glen Campbell produces a letter that labels Mason 'Poisonous'. Mason to his credit batted it away with surprising aplomb whilst at the same time pointed out his principed stance against bullies.
Strangest moment of the debate was when discussing oil revenue, specifically the proposal by the SNP of some kind of 'windfall' as a result of the huge increase in oil revenue. Campbell turns to the audience for their comments, both make comments unrelated to oil revenue !!
Well done the members of the audience, many would have been very anxious about asking questions in public ........ apart from the one who had the last question and asked a banal 'any good news' question.
Most difficult moment for Mason:
It looked as though he was going to struggle with accusations of watering down anti-social measures, he didn't. He actually got the better of Curran by stating that £500,000 per asbo was not money well spent and finnished her off by stating she voted against extra police.
Worst moment for Curran:
Honestly too many to choose, but probably the taxi driver who pointed at her and coldy stated "We are voters, and you'll find out what we think" ................. marvellous.
What of Campbell:
He was fine, if you ignore his opening bark at John Mason "Taht'll be a no then !!" when asking about compulsory jail for carrying a knife.
However, the Dorothy Grace Elder letter and his accusations that Mason is poisonous was shocking, it took BBC journalism to a new low.
The last ten minutes of the programme had an uncomfortable feel about it, it was out of kilter with the previous 35-40 minutes.

[bold]The only problem with a local income tax is how would the fact that Scotland had a fair and easily collected tax go down in England.[/bold]
Just imagine English pensioners taken to court for not paying their council tax when it continues rising well above inflation, when Scottish pensioners pay far less on average due to the fairer system. Headlines in the Daily Mail, English pensioners support Scottish pensioners.
If anything highlights the difference between the SNP and Labour, Local Income Tax does. Labour oppose it because of the backlash they will get from England, the SNP propose it because it will benefit Scotland.
The truth is Labour are petrified of Local Income Tax, and all the propaganda from the tame media cannot change that fact.

I've been on the Aljazeera site (aljazeera.net/engli
sh). They have a program called Listening Post which investigates the abuse of Press. I have suggested that they look at the Scottish Press and how they censor and restrict comments when it becomes too hot for Labour.
What is the betting that that The Herald will prevent all comments on Scottis Politics - in particular the By-Election until it's over.

Campbell's resort to "rabbit out the hat" of what went on in an SNP branch was frankly, comical. Even if you had never seen the four candidates before, you would conclude by that point that three of them were decent, sincere people. One came over as a broken glass-voiced sterrheid rammy merchant.
BTW "[bold]Disgusted Dorothy[/bold] " is NOT Dorothy Grace-Elder!

Baffled - yes you are looking at a full moon but in your case its Hamish's backside.
I see Labour still does not like LIT and has brought on board a whole load of hard hitters to support it Baffled.
I see Robin on another piece is questioning whether it is credible that the SNP can push Labour so close in their 3rd safest Scottish seat whilst with his other hat on pontificating on behalf of David Cairns who is in a tiz because Brownovitch is being compared to Thatcher - the lady he and Bliar had to tea.
Baffled has Hamish worked out he is not an anarchist yet?
Have you remembered this afternoon's new words lesson and how you use the word spurious?
As in your posts, Baffled, are spurious (not genuine or real).
Has Hamish McAussie worked out the difference between Marshall's £500,000 of expenses for the property that did not exist being investigated by the Electoral Commission under PPER 2000 Act and Wee Eck's expenses that are not? Has he made any connection between this potentially criminal breech of PPER by Mr Marshall and his sudden resignation? Does he still think the good people of Glasgow East should not be told why Mr Marshall has really resigned?
Nope - still dislikes the natives and wants them kept in their place?
Away back to your bunker until you have something useful to add to human existence.

To all - The best way to deal with the Poisonious Press and Media - Dont buy the papers and dont watch the EBC.
Or find an elderly relative and move in with them - so you dont pay the English Media Tax - other wise known as the TV license fee!
I have not bought a newspaper for years now. I have not watched any political coverage on TV - EBC OR ETV for years either.
I knew exactly what was going to happen tonight - especially if SNP is running any quisling Party close. I bet that everyone who watched that garbage could have predicted what was going to happen.
I choose not to get myself angry by watching such garbage. It stops the clear thinking that is required by all who believe in Scottish Freedom.
It is not just Scottish Freedom that is at stake - It is the creation of a fair and just society that is at stake as well.
There will be no better revenge on the quislings than to go out and argue in a calm, clear and persuavive manner for the cause of Scottish Independence and the creation of a fair and just society.
Dont let them get you angry. Hey the best revenge is that which is served cold! What better way to take that revenge than by winning in Glasgow East next week. It might not happen but I am sure of this that It is coming yet for a that!
You know that the quislings are only going to get more vindictive, spiteful and poisonous. Immunise yourselfs agaist it.
In over 30 years of canvassing, leafletting etc - I have had dogs set on me, I have been spat at and worse. I dont get angry! But I am angry - dont let them see that! Get even!

Do the snp not have their own private forum where you can talk to each other in private and fulminate about how you are all persecuted for being true patriots?

excellent analysis george, totally agree with you.
Even the evident bungling of a BBC inside job on Mason was hilarious, he dealt with it very well I thought.
Curran was a usually not answering any questions, just repeating her statement sin as many ways as possible. How can an ex-minister be to 'sympathetic' to soooo many issues yet did zilch in office.
I got the impression that alcohol and fuel both played quite strongly tonight, both were weak for Curran.
Robertson is obviously of the Tavish Scott 'hardline' school of federalism, i.e. they aren't!. I'm hoping the Mike Rumbles or inded Captain Mannering can wipe the floor for Tavish, he and his young team of party careerist (purvis, robertson, mcarthur etc etc) will sound the deaht nail for the liberal sin Scotland, essentially leading them onwards as lapdogs to labour.

It was very strange that a letetr should be sued liek that ona BBC Debate, I've can't remember ever seening that before ina debate problem, that is supposed to be an opportunity for the people of Glasgow East to question the Candidate son matters which relate to the constitenency.....
What relevance did a personal attack on John Mason have to that debate?
Yet another question for Newsnight's editors.
Glen Campbell seems intent on pulling Newsnight Scotland into the gutter, time to get this idoot packed off to London, get Brewer or indeed MacWhirter back in.

I loved it wen mags said if i'm being honest, hahahahaha, surely it should have been if i 'knew how' to be honest (allegedly!!!)
Thought the ambush was shocking and hearing what was said didn't sound remotely poisonous. I hope these dirty underhand tactics are seen by the voters for what they are (course i hope all the voters are in a similar mind frame as the taxi driver!)

No, the slickness of Robertson is off putting, he's simply a new labour offshoot, same right wing tendencies as Tavish Scott.....
Once again Curran got disproportionately more air time that any other candidate, it's time the BBC got better presenters/interview
ers, ones that can actually chair a debate and let people ask questions and get answers.
Glen Campbell was dire as usual.

How does that work? I really don't understand why they would hav Labour as favourites but think the SNP are going to win. How do 'liabilities' affect this and why are Labour favourites with all the bookies?
Newsnight? Well, a bit let down by Mason. He did ok but I don't think people connect to well with him. I'm sure in time he'll have a commanding tv persona but this doesn't help. Far too long spent on 'law and order' and nothing really on the referendum. What is Curran's position. I thought Campbell was a bit amateurish. The letter was an outrage. Who cares what Dotty Elder says? Branch politics but no discussion of a referendum? What kind of rubbish is that?

Grizelda is obviously determined to get at John Mason and the SNP no matter the consequences - letting her irrational hatred once again get the better of her.
She deliberately passes over a letter to a Beeb hack in order to undermine a former colleague's election campaign.
For someone who allegedly believes in Independence, she has a funny way of showing it.

As for odds. If they had higher liabilities over a Labour win does that mean they are shortening the odds in case of a Labour win and a really big pay-out? That sort of makes sense. Who is putting all this money on Labour then? The bookies must know. Could they be 995 bets?

FELLOW PATRIOTS
Once again the fascist brit colonial controlled broadcaster the EBC has made our candidate look like a complete and utter tumshie.
I say this.
It is now time that all TRUE PATRIOTS did something about the disgraceful hysterical anti Scottish filth that seeps from that rotting putrescent cesspit.
I propose that all TRUE SCOTSMEN form an armed militia to seize control of the imperialist lackey broadcasting stations and newspapers. Only then can we be sure that the people of Scotland hear THE TRUTH instead of the lies and smears and innuendo and er other stuff. Only then will the people of Scotland see THE LIGHT.
SCOTLAND'S DESTINY IS IN YOUR HANDS!
All suitably armed volunteers to assemble at Parkhead Forge tomorrow morning at 9.30 am.
PS Please bring a packed lunch
PPS If it's raining we'll leave it till Saturday morning.

Vote for Scotlands Future
I really do not understand your criticism of Robert Dunwoodie. In my opinion his articles while perhaps leaning towards unionism pose valid questions.
I support the SNP because they are the vehicle of independence, They are nevertheless politicians and untrustworthy unless proven otherwise. It is good to be cynical towards all politicians.
Labour however are corrupt and aimless. No informed, sane voter should vote for them: they have failed Scottish voters comprehensively.
If you are a unionist at heart vote LD and federalism (though this is flawed, it may save the union[ ).
If you are a socialist at heart vote SSP
If you want Scottish interests vote SNP.
If you are an ecologist above all, vote green.
Labour and Tory are a complete waste. Do not entertain them.

I see Tavish is advocating that Scotland should raise the 'majority' of it's own taxes, I wonder if he'll include Oil Revenue in that?
It's a clear sing that the Liberals gras roots are coming round to agreeing to a referendum, even if Lavish Tavish hasn't yet caught that bus.

I read Curran argued that independence for Scotland was an non-issue, a diversion, all to often used by the SNP as a panacea.
The BBC interviewer's ploy to trip Mason up as a maverick only gave Mason the opportunity to show he was in fact a rebel, and had altered Labour council policy by standing up to what he saw as an injustice. The letter (if I have it correct) came in the form of a memo from Mason suggesting the formation of two local parties from one warring party might be a short-term solution to the local schism it were enduring.
This, it was asserted, showed Mason up as a disruptive force.
I think there are two sorts of rebellion; there's the purely personal, and there is the desire for a different kind of community from that in which the rebel finds himself. In this latter case he can share his desire with others, and that in turn, can be shared by all except a minority who feel they profit by the extising system.
That type of rebel is constructive, not anarchic.
Any attempt, therefore, to paint Mason as a loose canon is wholly unwarranted and unjust. Even if a rebel causes some anarchy to arise his efforts, in the end, tend to lead to a more stable society.
It is the impersonal character of his aims that distinguishes him from the anarchist.
An individual might perceive a way of life, or a method of social organisation, (for example, a greater and more influencial share than hitherto in the goverance of an independent Scotland) by which more of the desires of the people can be satisfied than under the existing system.
If that "rebel" can persuade folk to adopt his reform, he is justified.
In any event, without rebellion the world would stagnate. When independence arrives, I know there will be dispute and argument as this and that faction argue the best way forward. All that is very healthy. Still waters stagnate.
History is full of political reform, movements begun by individuals, at first ridiculed by the mass, then by insistence and argument, praised for their visionary zeal.
The man who refuses to obey authority, who declines to accept the [italic]status quo[/italic], has a legitimate function, provided his disobedience has motives which are social rather than personal.
That is the difference between the actor, Michie, who, grabbing a passing spotlight and proclaiming the opposite to what he had proclaimed last year, only managed to cover himself in humiliation, and why Mason rose in estimation by showing his doggedness was, and is, activity designed to improve his society for the general good.

Watched last nights Newsnight Scotland Special
It really was a non event, especially with Glen Campbell letting of Margaret Curran on a number of points. But when Cambell turned on John Mason regarding a letter to Dorothy Grace Elder, I realised how biased the BBC really are! What was the relevance of the letter? It was just something the BBC brought up in order to attack the SNP with, which had no relevance what so ever to the by election.
When the Taxi driver asked about why an oil rich nation such as Scotland struggles with fuel costs and po holes in roads, there was no pressure placed on Curran to answer. I also noticed another question earlier in the program, which would have put Labour on the spot was just completly ignored and Cambpell continued with the soft questions. All in all very disapointing

nouveauxscum on 12:16am today I see Tavish is advocating that Scotland should raise the 'majority' of it's own taxes, I wonder if he'll include Oil Revenue in that? It's a clear sing that the Liberals gras roots are coming round to agreeing to a referendum, even if Lavish Tavish hasn't yet caught that bus. [/quote] Aye, pretty stupid thing for ole redbeard to say since we already raise all of our own taxes. Doh! It's just that it all gets sent to London and not much of it comes back.
It's Shetland's oil. lol
