Labour MPs in open revolt over tax
 |
| GERRY SUTCLIFFE: Sided with industry, then changed tack. |
Gordon Brown was last night facing an "open tax revolt" from his own MPs after the minister responsible for pub licensing attacked the rise in alcohol duty and dozens of Labour back benchers vented their anger at Sunday's abolition of the 10p income tax rate, claiming it will hit the low-paid.
One disgruntled MP told The Herald: "We have done a lot to help business and the better-off, but we are in danger of losing our core vote. Gordon is not listening."
Just days after Ivan Lewis, the Westminster Health Minister, warned the UK Government was "losing touch" with ordinary voters, Gerry Sutcliffe, the Culture Minister in charge of licensing, backed the drink industry's complaint that Alistair Darling in last month's Budget had pushed alcohol duty too high.
The Chancellor raised the ire of the Scotch Whisky Association by slapping 55p on a bottle of whisky while pubs complained of 4p on a pint of beer with some mounting a campaign to ban Mr Darling from their doors. In a move which will not endear him to Downing St, Mr Sutcliffe sided with the industry when he told the Morning Advertiser, a trade paper: "The industry's right to be upset. We and I, (who) speak as a champion of the pub trade, want the Chancellor to change his mind."
As the row broke, the Bradford MP performed a remarkable volteface and issued a
second statement, declaring: "My comments do not accurately reflect my views."
He added: "I fully support the tax measures in the Budget and the Chancellor's decisions on tax. Alcohol duty increases will go towards helping some of
the poorest members of our society."
Jeremy Beadles of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, picked up on the minister's
initial remarks, insisting: "Gerry Sutcliffe is right and the Chancellor was wrong; this is no time to be punishing the consumer with inflation-busting tax rises on alcohol."
Last night, the Prime Minister and Chancellor were also facing growing trouble on another front - over their decision in the Budget to pay for a 2p cut in the basic rate of income tax by getting rid of the 10p rate, both of which take effect on Sunday, the start of the new tax year.
Labour MPs raised their concerns that the abolition would hit the poorest in society at Monday's private party meeting in the Commons attended by Mr Brown. However, in what will be a worrying sign for the PM, some 26 yesterday made their revolt public by signing a new parliamentary motion. Two previous ones now each have totals of Labour MPs of around 40.
| ‘We are in danger of losing our core vote. Gordon is not listening’ | |
|
In the latest motion, back benchers complain that "despite assurances to the contrary" many people were being made worse off by the abolition with a disproportionate effect on the poorest in society.
They add that they are "dismayed at the response to the plight of those adversely affected" and call on the Chancellor to "bring forward measures to correct this damaging change to the taxation system".
One of the signatories, Rosemary McKenna, the normally loyal MP for Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East, made clear she had raised
concerns over the abolition of the 10p rate months ago.
She said: "I'm extremely concerned that the lowest-paid in the public sector and pensioners on low incomes are being hit hard. We are attacking the poorest and it's just wrong." She added that what she and her colleagues are calling for is not for a reintroduction of the 10p rate but for the Chancellor to make changes to, say, tax allowances and credits, so that the poorest in society do not get penalised disproportionately.
Some back benchers south of the border fear the tax change could hit them in the local elections on May 1. Nia Griffith, a parliamentary aide and MP for Llanelli, said the 10p rate abolition did "not look good" and the UK
Government should have "woken up to it sooner".
The Institute of Fiscal Studies, the respected economic think-tank, has estimated the move will leave 5.3m families earning between £5400 and £18,500 a year worse off.
Last night, the Conservatives seized on Labour's back-bench rebellion and the
minister's comments. George Osborne, the Shadow Chancellor, claimed the PM's
tax policy was falling apart, insisting: "There is an open tax revolt in the Labour Party and it shows the government is in disarray as a serious economic crisis looms."

The MP's are waking up to the thick and steaming they are in Scotland, their researchers will have checked the Comres.co.uk poll results and now we see the weakest and most frightened of Labour MP's heading for the lifeboats and sod the women and children.
-22% for Wendy, Labour in Scotland vote share at 11% and 29% of current unionist voters saying they will shift to SNP if Gordon does not stop messing around with the Scottish Block Allocation of funds.

Before I say my piece on this I know I have a choice as to whether or not I smoke and I know it is bad for me and I openly admit it is the worst thing I ever did and I curse the day I smoked my first cigarette.........ho
wever what is all this uproar about 50p on a bottle of whisky when Labour in particular have exploited the addiction to nicotine shamelessly for the eleven years they have been in power. the latest hike, and the previous one, were both 11p on a packet of twenty? (Sorry for the very long sentence but I am agitated about this : )
It used to be cigarette increases were around 2 or 3 pence, then it was 5 pence, now they aren't even embarrassed by the fact that they use smokers as a form of raising revenue when it suits and will add 11p on without flinching! Meanwhile retailers add their own separate increases at the drop of a hat by 4p at a time. It is shocking. Now they add 50p to a bottle of whisky and its the end of the world. Don't we realise that whisky in Scotland does as much damage as cigarettes? The hypocrisy is nauseating.
I will stop this year because I'm determined now and I'm sick of it and I hate it! I wish on this government the horror of every single smoker in the country stopping on the same day, at the same hour. The Chancellor will die of shock overnight and they will have to put at least 5p on the basic rate at least to recover their losses. Every packet of cigarettes sold in this country sends 85% of its cost straight to the Treasury. Yes we smokers are addicts, and we are fools to do it, but lets hear it about the blatant exploitation in that area when they have left whisky alone for quite some time.

When you see someone like Rosemary McKenna who's private polls are probably telling her that if an election was held now she would loose her seat starting to panic and ask questions, after years of mind numbing loyalty, you know they are in trouble, and the few sensible MPs they have left know it.
How long before a group of MSPs break away and form Scottish Labour and ditch Wendy? If they backed sensible policies from the goverment, and provided decent opposition when that was required, they could be an asset to Holyrood.
Big question, do any of them have the courage and the brain power to do it, or will they follow Wendy and Broon like the load of lemmings that most of them are?

How many wheels do this pathetic excuse for a government have left on their wagon. I think very few. I hope they all lose their seats, but most particularly Broon and Broonee, Cairns and Darling, a miserable bunch of quislings.
[quote]"My comments do not accurately reflect my views."[/quote]
Ha Ha... did you misspeak like Mrs Clinton? You're a pathetic tw@t of an excuse for a man. Did Gordon threaten to take away some of your fat rat salary? Or dob you in for your expenses? Pi$$ off you idiot.
Clare.... I gave up smoking 3 years ago. I thought it would be really hard to do, but in fact it was easy. I now save £20+ a week that I would have smoked. I smell better, my flat and clothes smell better. I can't honestly say I feel better, but the great thing is I'm doing Gordon Brown out of £20 a week. Now that just has to be worth the effort.
So good luck. You can do it if it deprives them of money to spend on the rubbish they spend it on.!

Gordon Brewer gets it wrong again. On the discussion on high finance and mortgage problems tonight Gordon was shot down several times by the experts in his postulatiing on these topics. “…well that’s not exactly right said one lady he was interviewing”.
He also appears to have a short memory . About two minutes after the American, Mr Volker, stated that Magrahi should stay in Scotland to serve his sentence and said that the US was involved in setting up the trial and its conditions at Camp Zeist, the bold Gordon said to Glenn Campbell “…. if I remember correctly the Americans set up Camp Zeist? He really is losing it.

It really is hillareous, THE NEW LABOUR PARTY has - acording
to "Sister" Wendy, just re-discovered "socialism" and now we find
yet another policy specifically set to hammer the poorest sectors in
society. Is this what a NEW LABOUR "moral compass, " a "son

And tonight we had the unedifying prospect of that other NEW
LABOUR animal and war-criminal, Blair, giving a speech in

like him in all aspects of the decision - making proccesses in
society.
And so I wonder if THE NEW LABOUR Cyber- Pimps, like am2,

do - like rats on the sinking ship - whenever yet another debacle
occurs? It truely must be hell on Earth supporting such a rable

"One disgruntled MP told The Herald: "We have done a lot to help business and the better-off, but we are in danger of losing our core vote. Gordon is not listening.""
Aye and us canny scots sniffed you out a few years ago. We saw you all saying one thing and doing the very opposite of what you got elected on.
If you cheat me shame on you, If you cheat me again. Shame on me!
The only people Labour can attract are people on the make , sheep or party activists looking for grace and favour. to which you have been very generous as a party at a quango level.
Scotland is sick fed up of it. Snide and cynical doublespeak is only a thing you here these days any time labour speaks. At the end of what they say your not really any clearer on what they just said. In essence they are so vague and two sided.
I am glad I swithed from LAbour. Until Mcconnel and co took over the young socialists the party was ok. The tories convinced the old guard they would manage better. From then on in they have engraciated their pals in labour and seized control. They were aware in 1985 poitics works in cycles. You get elected for a few years then as a aprty you get dumped for a few. All they are are tories dressed up like caring socialists or social reformers.

All words and no actions.

Look at Iraq. The MPs and Msp's who voted against such a keystone policy all got deselected from on high. So even if they face the rath of the voters it's nothing compared to the party.
At least if they stay loyal like cannon fodder. They might still get a nice wee apointment later on. Or passed over to the friendly head of a quango to renumerate you.

Labour have this endless cycle in power:
Promise the brave new world, Blow all the public money, See no improvement, Run out of money, Borrow money, Demonise and Tax Tax Tax the wealth creators, Wealth creators leave country (cos they can), Other countries benefit from our wealth creators, Regular workers and low paid left behind get stiffed with the increasing bill! Labour start to polarise, [italic][bold]BIG BANG[/bold][/italic] , someone hits self destruct button!
Only bright side is that some in Scotland are starting to question this mad tax and spend mentality. Aye Right!

"Clare, Lanarkshire,
It used to be cigarette increases were around 2 or 3 pence, then it was 5 pence, now they aren't even embarrassed by the fact that they use smokers as a form of raising revenue when it suits and will add 11p on without flinching! "
[bold]Aggregates Tax has just gone up from £1.60 to £1.95 per tonne (+VAT), an increase of 22%.
Landfill Tax is up £8.00 to £32.00 per tonne, and will rise in the next three years to almost £50.00 per tonne (+VAT)[/bold]
"Clare, Lanarkshire,
I will stop this year because I'm determined now and I'm sick of it and I hate it! I wish on this government the horror of every single smoker in the country stopping on the same day, at the same hour. The Chancellor will die of shock overnight and they will have to put at least 5p on the basic rate at least to recover their losses. Every packet of cigarettes sold in this country sends 85% of its cost straight to the Treasury"
[bold]Wish you well in giving up smoking but how can we give up building houses, roads and throwing away our rubbish?

'The abolition of the 10p tax rate will hit the low paid', surely not? Should Wendy the born again socialist not be standing up for Scotland and voicing her disapproval? No, thought she wouldnt. As for Brown, a scotch on the rocks if ever i saw one. Labour are all over the place, who would want to vote for that lot.
Id also like to kick the smoking this year, be a good idea to stick a pic of Gordon Brown on a pack, that would be a real spur to deprive him of our money.

Same old sewer on the comments page I see. I would have thought people would be happy that the scottish labour party and the scottish national party saw eye to eye on the need to make booze more expensive. They both march to the same drum of protestant disavowal of booze on this one.
Isn't Scotland totally schizoid on this one one half tee-total ramrod straight in its disaproval of earthly pleasures, the other too busy rolling in the sewer from one fight to the next shag to pay any notice?

Most of the above commentators (sic) write like inebriate monkeys with a grudge. So perhaps that is why they are upset. Don't forget a majority of Scots voted for and will continue to vote for the labour party so you are branding your friends and family and workmates with the same vile slurs you reserve for the labour party.
When is the herald going to moderate this sewer and stop anonymous posting?

Even though a majority of Scots did not in fact vote for Labour at the last elections, making the SNP the largest party in Holyrood and local government, it is best that Labour types just ignore that and insist on their rights to have such a majority. It is a clear affront, and possibly just an error on peoples' parts that they did not vote Labour.
Statements like a "majority of Scots voters will continue to vote Labour" could be misinterpreted as total arrogance, were they not properly understood as mere certain prediction that the natural order of things will be restored. Right-wing policies such as Iraq, Trident, cutting millionaire's inheritance tax, abolishing the lower 10p rate of tax have no bearing on how people perceive Labour.

Claire & Karin, good luck, but I liked the idea of Gordon Brown on a packet of cigarettes to help people stop smoking; I wonder if the monks at Buckfastleigh will do the same to their bottles.
Seriously though, the scrapping of the 10% grips my ring because there are loads of low paid people knocking their pans in just to keep body & soul together and now the carpet has been pulled from under them.
Get rid of these labour clowns next election.

John Humphries should take over the chair on QT, perhaps then we might enjoy some squirming by these so called politicians.

In the general election the majority of Scots voted labour and all the polls continue to suggest that that will be the case. The last election was very narrowly won by the SNP. In terms of total votes the unionist parties carried the day handsdown. There is no evidence to suggest that will change.
Labour have increased the pay of the lowest paid by over 60% raised countless thousands out of poverty and raised the overall wealth of the country. Not bad. The SNP have only be in power six months and look at the disaster in Aberdeen- soon to be repeated across Scotland.

Awh, can you put me right on something that confuses me? Why, if the SNP 5% funding increase for councils is so bad and will lead to cuts, did all Labour councils and the Labour chair of COSLA welcome it? Indeed, a Labour council even cut its council tax based on the funding package. Why are these Labour councils helping the SNP with their "cuts"?

"Labour MPs in revolt" is an example of an oxymoron.
It regularly turns up in press headlines but it hardly ever actually happens.
These people are far too tied into their perks and allowances and their expectation of social advancement. The fact is that outside, in the real world that most of us inhabit, they would be unemployable.

Same old sewer on the comments page I see. I would have thought people would be happy that the scottish labour party and the scottish national party saw eye to eye on the need to make booze more expensive. Isn't Scotland totally schizoid on this one one half tee-total ramrod straight in its disaproval of earthly pleasures, the other too busy rolling in the sewer from one fight to the next shag to pay any notice? As for your blind loyalty to the Labour Party you will find many in Scotland right now, who previously voted Labour, are at a crossroads politically because they can't in their hearts vote for that Party any more. Others previously of a Labour persuas
