No doubt all British Muslim doctors were shocked and horrified to hear about the Muslim doctors who have, allegedly, been involved in terrorist attacks in Glasgow and London.

We strongly believe that a truly practising Muslim doctor will never intentionally cause harm to any human being, or cause any damage to buildings.

Some may say that unjust, aggressive, British foreign policies might "provoke" some harmful and violent reactions. However, no harmful act against any innocent civilian can ever be justified or accepted in Islam.

In the Holy book, the Koran, it says that killing an innocent human life will be, in the eyes of God, like killing the whole of mankind.

Muslim doctors, nurses and other health professionals have faithfully served the British public for many years. Surely it would be wrong to stigmatise all Muslim doctors in Britain because of the few accused.

Their commitment is illustrated in the oath taken by Muslim physicians, which is as follows:
Praise be to Allah (God), the Teacher, the Unique, Majesty of the heavens, the Exalted, the Glorious, Glory be to Him, the Eternal Being Who created the Universe and all the creatures within, and the only Being Who contained the infinity and the eternity. We serve no other god besides Thee and regard idolatry as an abominable injustice.

Give us the strength to be truthful, honest, modest, merciful and objective.

Give us the fortitude to admit our mistakes, to amend our ways and to forgive the wrongs of others.

Give us the wisdom to comfort and counsel all towards peace and harmony.

Give us the understanding that ours is a sacred profession that deals with your most precious gifts of life and intellect.

Therefore, make us worthy of this favoured station with honour, dignity and piety so that we may devote our lives to serving mankind, poor or rich, literate or illiterate, Muslim or non-Muslim, black or white, with patience and tolerance, with virtue and reverence, with knowledge and vigilance, with Thy love in our hearts and compassion for Thy servants, Thy most precious creation.

Hereby we take this oath in Thy name, the Creator of all the Heavens and the earth and follow Thy counsel as Thou has revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

The Koran, chapter 5, verse 32, reads: "Whoever kills a person (soul) . . . It is as if he killed all mankind, and whoever saves a life, it is as if he saved the life of all mankind . . ."

This medical oath, which is a composite from the historical and contemporary writings of physicians of the Islamic world, was officially adopted by the Islamic Medical Association of North America in 1977.

Trying suspects
I don't think Alex Salmond and the Scottish Executive would agree with your correspondent M E Mackenzie (Suspects should be tried in nation with jurisdiction, July 5).

I'm sure they are glad to leave the massive problems of UK terrorism to MI5 and MI6.
