The new album from Jenna Reid, Laughing Girl, underlines her reputation as the leading fiddler of her generation in Scotland. To celebrate its release, the Shetlander is taking her sizzling reels and lovely slow airs on the road with guitarist Kevin Mackenzie for company.

One of a veritable rugby team of fiddlers who grew up together in the village of Quarff, 10 minutes' drive from Shetland's capital Lerwick, Reid spent her formative years studying the Shetland fiddle style with the late, great Willie Hunter, whose lyrical style remains a major inspiration.

She formed a group, Filska, with her younger sister Bethany when they were still in their early teens, and its gig sheet remains an integral part of her diary - alongside appearances with award-winning Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis in Dochas and with the ever-popular Deaf Shepherd. She also appeared in the recent Transatlantic Sessions and Phil Cunningham's Scottish Music television series. But it's in a duo such as the one with Mackenzie that Reid really blooms and shows why she was nominated as Best Instrumentalist in the 2007 Scots Trad Music Awards. Expect sparks to fly - and a good greet when she puts her heart and soul into the sad tunes.
