Back in the 1980s, the television programmes Aly Bain Meets the
Cajuns and Aly Bain & Friends helped to establish the Shetland fiddler as a household name in Scotland as well as a welcome houseguest in musical homes from Louisiana to Scandinavia. Now, with his partner in music and mirth, Phil Cunningham, Bain is bringing some of the strongest flavours of these programmes to a stage near you.
Comprising fiddler Michael Doucet, accordionist Marc and singer-guitarist Ann Savoy, the Savoy Doucet Cajun Band go right back to the source for their Louisiana dance tunes and ballads. As well as singing with Linda Ronstadt in the Zozo Sisters and appearing in the Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, Ann Savoy has written the definitive book on Cajun music, so you can expect the last word in authentic Louisiana expertise.
Crossing water from the opposite direction, fiddler Bjorn Stabi and accordionist Bengan Jansson bring the sizzling polskas and richly atmospheric airs of the Swedish tradition in a virtuoso package.
It wouldn't be an Aly & Phil extravaganza without a few tunes from various formations and the entire cast together, and with a jolly jape seldom far away when this pair are involved, Bellows and Bows promises to be a box, fiddle and fun festival.
