The 5pm slot may not be the natural habitat for jazz musicians and their audience, and some may find the £14 ticket price for 50 minutes' music a daunting prospect. This, though, is a classy big-band show that packs a lot of value - and actually a bit more time - into its allotted span.
Jason Isaacs is the focal and vocal point, a seriously high-kicking, self-deprecatingly daft-dancing and notably big-voiced singer with loads of presence and a lot of lip. His intonation might not be entirely faultless and his take on Van Morrison's Moondance didn't quite convince, but he carried off well-worn standards with style and introduced a few left-field additions to the swing canon, including an Elvis section and Oasis's Wonderwall, with persuasive chutzpah.
What really made the show, though, were the arrangements and crisp, invigorating playing of Dave Connolly's band. Comprising three trumpets, three saxophones, three trombones and a four-piece rhythm section, it produced a really satisfying, full sound, and although solos were kept to a rather mean minimum, the ones we got - all of them concise, direct and passionate - suggested that a full set by the band itself would be a blast.
