ALASTAIR Michie, who has died aged 86, was the painter whose skills as a colourist produced powerful abstract works influenced by the natural world. He engaged in the Edinburgh tradition of producing pieces sensuously coloured with bold handling of paint, using matt and scraped paint to suggest wind-blown nature.

PAMELA McCarroll died aged 18 following an accident at Tutuwau Falls in Guyana, South America, and there was a palpable sense of anguished disbelief and genuine sorrow in Beith when news arrived of her death. Her parents, Peter and Sheila McCarroll, are very well known in the town where Sheila is a respected GP and Peter is popular in local rugby circles.
