Callum Brown (Letters, May 12) relates the sad story of the loss of Kilmadock Parish Church. The resistance and efforts of the congregation and local community to save the kirk aroused feelings of deja vu in my own community, where an almost identical battle was fought and lost.
Mount Zion Church, situated in Quarrier's Village, Renfrewshire, was built in 1888. Quarriers organisation, which owned the building, sold it to the developers, Burrell, who proposed to convert it into luxury flats.
After various skirmishes between Quarriers, the "Save Quarrier's Church" committee, Burrell and Inverclyde Council's planning department, it was the Scottish Executive that gave the go-ahead.
Perhaps the saddest part of our story is that two years later, having sold the pipe organ and the Victorian chiming bells, Burrell has recently intimated that it has decided not to proceed with the redevelopment of the property. Naturally, the building has deteriorated during the total of four years that it has lain empty. To date, we have been unable to get any further information - eg, asking price - but we do intend to pursue this matter.
We have been convinced from the start that Burrell's proposed use for this church, known as the "Children's Cathedral", would not be pleasing in the sight of God for whose worship it was built. We look for His guidance as to how we should now proceed.
