| Ladytron, Oran Mor, Glasgow | | 12:12am Thursday 15th May 2008 | | Someone wise once said that nothing dates as quickly as yesterday's futurism, and Ladytron are proof that this may be true. This was a frustrating and unlovely gig. But, in Ladytron's defence, it was marred by a thunderous, smeared and incoherent sound. | | By PHIL MILLER, Arts Correspondent |
| Marissa Nadler, Stereo, Glasgow | | 12:12am Thursday 15th May 2008 | | Tuesday night offered a brief, yet insightful, glimpse into the world of Massachusetts-based singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler. Hers is a place of dreamy-folk music underpinned by a darker baroque and, at times gothic, quality which, to these ears, makes for a voice to watch out for. | | By DAVE PRATER |
| Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra, Oran Mor, Glasgow | | 12:32am Wednesday 14th May 2008 | | The diverse assortment of facial expressions on display during the third movement of William Walton's Suite from Henry V was enough to convince anyone of the sheer depth of physicality required to bring this music off the page and into Monday evening's summery, if slightly windswept, drive-time concert at the Oran Mor. | | By AMY PARKER |
| Zarraberri/Limbo, Oran Mor, Glasgow | | 12:32am Wednesday 14th May 2008 | | Chris Dolan's translations of comic shorts from Spain have become an irregular fixture of A Play, A Pie and A Pint's ongoing seasons of lunchtime theatre. They have not been particularly remarkable, more one-line joke diversions than anything substantial. This latest double is no exception, though both in different ways display a satirical depth at their essentially madcap heart. | | By NEIL COOPER |
| Tift Merritt, Pleasance Cabaret Bar, Edinburgh | | 12:49am Tuesday 13th May 2008 | | Star rating: ****
On her next trip to Scotland, Tift Merritt wants to visit, and maybe play on, Islay, from where her great-grandfather, Angus MacTaggart, emigrated to the US. The singer-songwriter from North Carolina doesn't know this yet, but Islay has just the venue for her: Bruichladdich Hall. She doesn't know this either, but she gave a pretty good preview here of what a Tift Merritt gig would feel like in the hall that has habitually brought out the best in many an Islay visitor. | | By ROB ADAMS |
| Magpie, Dundee Rep | | 12:16am Friday 9th May 2008 | | Magpies, as you know, like to surround themselves with other people's bright, shiny treasures. Probe - the multi-talented duo of Antonia Grove and Theo Clinkard - extends its magpie tendencies towards choreographic gems. Seven of them, in this eclectic programme: five duets and two solos, all watchable, all performed with a lovely enthusiasm as well as high-powered technical finesse, but some proving more dazzling than others. | | By MARY BRENNAN |
| The City, Royal Court Theatre, London | | 12:36am Wednesday 7th May 2008 | | In a world that is both blank and confusing, the only thing to hang on to in The City, Martin Crimp's absorbing new play, is the characters. And then, of course, they are in turns both bank and confusing, too. | | By PHIL MILLER, Arts Correspondent |
| Death Story, Oran Mor, Glasgow | | 12:36am Wednesday 7th May 2008 | | Students of both theatre
studies and the more practical side of drama should make a date with A Play, A Pie and A Pint this week to see how some things should be done. | | By KEITH BRUCE, Arts Editor |
| Alasdair Gray: Now And Then, Sorcha Dallas, Glasgow | | 12:36am Wednesday 7th May 2008 | | Review: This show has been a long time coming. In 1971, a short film for the BBC was proposed, a tale of a woman raking over the coals of a failed relationship, the story told in a series of flashback scenes made up of paintings by Alasdair Gray and poetry by Liz Lochhead. | | By JACK MOTTRAM |
