Music: David Gray, Carling Academy, Glasgow
STUART MORRISONNovember 12 2007

Star rating: ****

David Gray's career has reached the inevitable "greatest hits" stage and a packed Carling Academy was proof that there is considerable popular enthusiasm for the idea. Neatly solving the problem of who to take as asupport act, he did the job himself, playing a solo acoustic slot before the main event. As is so often the case, some of the best known songs were rejuvenated by being stripped back to basics. Babylon, his breakthrough, multi-million seller from 1999, was beautifully done. This Year's Love, also from the White Ladder album, finished this segment of the show to a forest of video phones.

It wasn't just the songs which had been given a fresh lease of life. Gray split his band after the last tour, retaining only bassist Rob Malone from that line-up.

Opening with his new single You're the World to Me, Gray bounced through a history of his output to date. Sail Away from White Ladder, Be Mine from A New Day at Midnight and the truly excellent Slow Motion from Life in Slow Motion were given a real boost by a band going all out to prove themselves.

Absolutely wonderful talent, and from a man who while rightly having a guid conceit of himself, seems determined not to live on past glories.
If there IS anyone out there who hasn't experienced the David Gray effect, get down the record store today.

I was at the carling last week and DG was in fine form. A true artist in every sense of the word. He genuinely enjoys performing and that rubs off on the audience.
I sang along to all his classics and also thoroughly enjoyed his two new songs "World To Me" and "Destroyer" both available on his new "Greatest Hits" album. There is talk of a new album some time next year and I personally can't wait.

i saw david on saturday 17th nov in dublin's national stadium
and it was definitely a night of gutters full of rain as the heavens opened. but thankfully nothing could put a dampener on a wonderful night of music from David Gray, who on the night looked as if he were enjoying it as much as we were.what a mesmerising night and songs, some of which gave me goosebumps as i was lucky enough from the 4th row to experience every feeling that went into every song. thank you david gray..
