Society - comment: In July last year the Scottish charity regulator OSCR – the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator – published the results of its first review of a sample of Scottish charities against the public benefit test provided for in the 2005 Scottish Charities Act.
Society: Who’d be a charity trustee? These hardy individuals have to wrestle with red tape, regulation and their roles as employers, fundraisers and upholders of charitable mission – and all this for nought but goodwill.
Society: It is commonplace to read that Britain is gripped by a love of money and obsessed with celebrity and VIPs. I think it nearer the truth to say that the media gives prominence to individuals who represent money and fame.

Obituary: Professor John Sizer, who has died aged 69, was a distinguished academic teacher, writer and public servant. He was the Chief Executive of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council from its inception in 1992 until he retired in 2001.
