The Saturday Essay: The history of the Act of Settlement is what Stephen Fry would no doubt describe as quite interesting. The early-eighteenth-century background is not half as fascinating, though, as the simple fact that the thing survives.

Putting the blame on the kids from Fame
12:08am Saturday 3rd May 2008
I blame fame. Not the abstract concept of popularity but the 1980s television series, Fame. Ever since dowdy British viewers were dazzled by the sight of American teenagers star-jumping off car roofs and being told that "right here is where you start paying", a ghastly toll has been extracted from society.

What’s the story with... Miley Cyrus?
12:08am Saturday 3rd May 2008

Terry Neason: Secret Smiles & Love Songs
12:01am Friday 2nd May 2008
Review: Terry Neason tells a funny story - one of many - about her relationship with her treadmill. It's about getting in shape for the show, of course, yet the irony is that she might easily swap the treadmill for the Citizens' studio floor.

Ethical living: Lying in our tent in France one hot night last summer, I found myself musing, like I always do when camping, on how little it was possible to live on during a holiday and how much stuff I had back home. What was it all for?
