Find the perfect way to shine this summer
ELIZABETH McMEEKINMay 07 2008

Fabric is all too often forgotten about. Flicking through the rails of new season stock, we're all tantalised by those bright colours and trend-conscious silhouettes, ignoring the materials on offer. Let's face it, that dress could be made from cotton, silk or linen, but if it's not the right shade and shape, we're not likely to be interested.

Such forgetfulness would be a mistake this spring/summer season. While the cut of your togs might still impress, it's the fabric that people will really be checking out.

Satins will feature strongly on the high street this summer, thanks to their jewel-like quality and ability to glisten in the sun without blinding oncoming strangers - a problem peculiar to highly reflective sequins. One only has to think of all those sumptuous couture ball gowns from the 1950s to instantly see why satins fit so perfectly with this new set of trends.

But while satin frocks might look great at a big event, wearing them in everyday life can be a little bit more challenging. The trick is to keep things simple and avoid any garish prints, which can look a little dressy for the daytime.

Pair satins with different textures such as thick linens for a modern look.

For more ideas, take a look at our three outfits on the right.

Nights in white satin (1)
If satin floats your boat, then there's nothing better than a chic colourful top, which will easily integrate into your wardrobe. This pretty, little green top from Hobbs (£69) is the perfect way to dip your toe in the water of this trend - an ideal accompaniment to most outfits, it will ensure you look trendy this summer. To create a chic and co-ordinated daytime look, pair the top with this olive green skirt from Marks & Spencer's Limited Collection (£35). To finish, this classic brown bag from L K Bennett (£229) will work perfectly.

Satin your lap (2)
With all the attention being lavished on summer frocks at the moment, it's easy to forget how versatile trousers can be at this time of year. Look for breeks that are light and airy, however - unless you want to boil inside your own clothes. Taking the same Hobbs green satin top, try pairing it with these high-waisted, brown linen trousers from Hobbs (£89). With a distinct 1920s look, these fabulous trousers will instantly give you longer legs, thanks to the high waist and wide cut. To add a touch of refinement, this navy blue leather skinny belt, also from Hobbs, (£29) should do the trick.

Satin Worship (3)
While spring might be clinging to us like a bad smell at the moment, all you optimists out there will be looking towards summer and the prospect of better weather. To get you in the mood, try pairing the same Hobbs green satin top with this safari-style cream dress from Marks & Spencer's Limited Collection (£39.50). Pop the top underneath the dress to give you a burst of glistening colour, and create a stylish day time look. Finish off the outfit with these fab brown leather, high heel, sling back sandals from L K Bennett (£149). Tanned skin and tropical conditions sadly not included.

Marks & Spencer 0131 225 2301, 0141 552 4546; L K Bennett 0131 226 3370/ 0141 221 5500.
