Round-the-world Rush are a band in a hurry …
...but they've always got time for Glasgow, finds Stuart Morrison
Alex Lifeson is full of apologies when The Herald's slot in his packed schedule eventually comes round. "I've got a huge list of people to call and they're all taking longer than their 10 minutes," he explains.
It's understandable - there's a lot to get through. The guitarist is one-third of Canadian legends Rush, who have just flown in from Canada to start the European leg of their world tour at Glasgow's SECC tonight, promoting their latest album, Snakes and Arrows. Despite the jetlag and the end-to-end interviews, Lifeson is in jovial mood.
"We're enjoying the tour," he says. "We're playing really well and the response has been great so far. The set includes nine new songs, which is more than we have ever included. That shows just how much we like
the album."
Snakes and Arrows does sound like a band enjoying themselves again. Perhaps,
I suggest, the album's producer, Nick Raskulinecz, renowned for his work with the Foo Fighters, pushed them hard. "Yes, he really wanted to do this record," agrees Lifeson. "We were the first band he ever saw, when he was 11 years old, and while we were anxious to move forward and be seen to be progressing, he made us step back a little and embrace our past. It sounds like a classic Rush record, but the music is very much where we want to go."
There's a scene in the documentary contained on the "tour edition" of the album in which the young producer congratulates exhausted drummer Neil Peart on the blistering take he has just completed only to suggest that he goes back and does it differently. "Yeah, but that's why we hire producers," laughs Lifeson.
"We've been doing this for the longest time and we know what we can do. Nick loved the music and gave us a different perspective on it."
Lifeson is keen to avoid the "nostalgia tour" tag. "The Police and bands like that are doing their greatest-hits thing now and we really covered that three years ago on our R30 tour. We want to move forward and we'll be touring this album until next summer, when I think we'll have done 110 shows."
Glasgow holds a special place in Rush history, with the "Glasgow Apollo Choir" credited on the track Closer to the Heart on their 1981 live album, Exit Stage Left. "The Glasgow crowd have always been special," says Lifeson. "When they started singing along, it really choked us up."
The rejuvenation of the city impressed the band when they last appeared three years ago. "The difference from our first visit, in 1977, was amazing," Lifeson says. "The transformation from a grey, industrial city to the modern, vibrant place it is now was striking."
In 1981, Lifeson performed a gruesome version of I Belong to Glasgow, which further endeared him to the crowd and made Neil Peart crack up. "That's not easy to do," he says with another laugh, "but you've got to try!"

Nice interview, although it was actually in 2004 that Alex performed the ad hoc "I Belong to Glasgow".
Can't wait til tonight it should be fantastic, they always put on an incredible show. One of the few bands that can make me feel like a teenager again, no mean feat I can assure you!

Hi Bob, you are quite right, it was in 2004 (gremlins at work!). And Nic Raskulinecz gained a 'K' somewhere, but hey-ho!
I've seen every show they've done here since 1977 and they do maintain an amazing standard. The review should be in later this week.

Rush always put on a great show with lasers and big video screens.
I hear the intro for entire world tour is Scottish based with a character saying "up yer jacksie" before every show!
Bring on the night.

Having seen the last Toronto show and watching the roadies pack up the gear, it was cool to see the large stickers on the crates labelled "GLASGOW".
To us Canadians, Geddy actually does a passable Scotsman!
Hope everyone enjoyed the show.

Oh... and the boys are probably hitting the sack... NOW!
Except Neil of course, who's relaxing with a book and The Macallan. ;-)

Not up to my expectations but still a great show. The boys weren’t as tight as they were on the R30 tour.
Alex’s Limelight intro was too early for Neil, who wasn’t even sat behind his kit!! Nice to see the smiles though as Alex realised.
Did anyone else notice a mistake during Entre Nous? Seemed like they missed a line.
Others may have noticed the sound loss during Circumstances then thru Subdivisions. I was on Geddy’s side so don’t know if it was obvious to everyone. It was frustrating though.
None of this spoiled the show for me personally. As usual Rush gave their all and went down a storm.
I feel lucky to have had the chance, once again to see this band live. Guys like these are an endangered species.
Looking forward to the next tour!!

Throat hoarse, ears ringing, joints aching but I'm elated after a fantastic night.
I'm glad I resisted peeking at any setlist spoilers because there were some real treats pulled out of the vaults, highlight for me the juxtaposed Subdivisions / Natural Science / Witch Hunt, classic Rush heaven!
The intro films were hilarious too, if the guys give up music a career in comedy acting awaits them.
When does that train to Bangkok leave?
FYI Splidoonk, I've since read a couple of reviews of shows from North America and the fluffed start to Limelight appears to be staged, just a bit of fun to start the show. As for Entre Nous I wasn't sure if that was an actual rearrangement or not (we've now decided to go to Manchester too, so I guess we'll find out there!)

Sounds like our friends across the pond had a great time at the first show on the European leg of the tour. Then again, that shouldn't surprise anyone...
Also glad to hear Alex confirm that the tour will continue into next year...Perhaps the band will throw a few more surprises into the set list :)
Enjoy the rest of the UK shows all-

Great show last night, for me possibly the slickest show since the Moving Pictures/Exit tour way too long ago when the Earth was still forming. Great set, lights show and for me the acoustics were spot on compared to R30 in the SECC. If only Geddy would dust off the ol' Rickenbaker.........

[bold]bold[/bold] The show last night was ....to coin a phrase AWSOME!
A couple next to me who live 2000 miles West of Toronto (British Columbia?) had unfortunately been unable to see Rush play at any of the three shows they played in Canada...so..they flew to Scotland instead! die hard fans..they had a great night and so did I.
I get to do it all again tomorrow night in Newcastle!
Great interview, thank you.

There are bands and there are the mighty RUSH!!!!! What a show the other night.Who cares about the set-list,every song was a joy to listen to and watch.Ten rows from the front and the sound was spot on.These guys are different class. What other band gives the fans a 3hour show????Not bad for a band who gets no airplay on mainstream radio stations in the UK.Instead we get the same old dross, they give us the bland that is Cold Dirge,Sleet Patrol,Travis(ty)Art
ic Chimps the list goes on.Get to a Rush gig and learn from 3 masters of their craft.

I was at both Shows in Toronto and Glasgow on Wednesday. Glasgow definitely had the best sound and the fans are always up for it. Set list hasn't changed much - they did include Summertime Blues for the 1st Toronto gig but I prefer it when they replace it with one of their own.
I think they are putting on an amazing show so to dig them up for the odd drop in sound appears a bit petty. The Limelight intro is definitely staged and is appropriate bearing in mind the Video preceeding it.
Wont see them now until Milan which is less than 3 weeks away!

He did, Passage to Bangkok.
Stevie Wonder would have a better view than those in my block had. The SECC's seating layout on the ticket webpage didn't seem to tie with reality.
As for the show, great to see so many youngsters 'getting' what the now late forty and fifty somethings have been saying for years. Alex, Geddy and Neil are in a league of their own as musicians, composers and performers and outright entertainers.

I went to the tour 3 times here in the States, and there were no problems with the sound, with Alex's intro to Limelight, or any sound loss during Circumstances. Once again they put on a flawless show. Now they are coming back to the States again, so I can see them for the 29th time, and maybe even more. If you like them enjoy the show, don't pick the blasted concert apart. When they retire, are you going to tell your kids about being able to see the greatest band of this century, or are you going to tell them they were good....but ..........? Some people I just don't understand.

Um dude, the Limelight thing was on purpose, it was a continuation of the opening video, they've done it at every show since opening night in Atlanta. Also, Geddy's side sucks sound wise because they don't run Alex enough trouth the PA. I was on Alex's side 8 times this tour, twice dead center, and once on Ged's side, and it's a huge difference. Caught a couple mistakes from Al 11 shows, Witch Hunt in West Palm (i think) he hit the chords a little early, then in Tampa he got out of time on the Freewill solo, he even "air" played it the next night in Charlotte during his pause (imagine that!!!) . Ged was about a half note too early with the Subdivisions keyboards at one show, and the Professor never goofed as far as i could tell! Not to bash the boys, they are the only band i aspire to play and listen to them almost exclusively! 42 shows thus far, and now with news of the new leg next summer I hope to catch a few more!!!

Back from Newcastle 3am last night - 2 brilliant shows, delighted to see Distant Early Warning instead of Summertime Blues. Felt sound was better in Newcastle at Geddy's side - heard that the band are shooting a documentary - thus crowd scenes being filmed by Geddy. It was good to be a Geordie for 1 Night - hope Rush visit again soon!!!
Just to convince my good lady that if Rush are prepared to come here to play, I should be able to go to Canada & US to see them!!
Great Stuff Rush.

First saw rush back in 79 at stafford bingley hall, been fortunate enough to see them on every uk tour since. Just experienced an evening with Rush in Chicago and what a show! Can honestly say these guys just get better with age. Great to hear old classics been played like circumstances, witch hunt and entre nous. The three masters are genuinely enjoying themselves on this tour and it shows. Cant wait for tonights show in Sheffield.

The crowds in all these cities have been absolutely phenomenal and [bold]HUGE![/bold] Do any of the die-hards out there that have been following the band for years think this tour feels like the Roll The Bones Tour? I was lucky enough to catch 4 shows on this tour - Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Antonio, and St Paul. All were outstanding, and flawless to my trained Rush eye. I've seen every tour since I first saw them in Nov 1978 in Phoenix on the Hemispheres Tour when I was 13 years old. How is it possible that they seem to keep getting BETTER??!! The boys rock, hopefully for a LOT longer!!

Saw the boys three times so far this tour and 15 times total. Each show has it's "mistakes". Those of you who make note of the errors possible don't realize just how incredibly challenging their show is! I've seen all kinds of things go wrong. It makes the show better for me as it reaffirms they play for real, triggering nearly everything, and playing the most difficult music in rock. Heck, Peart even dropped a stick during his solo the first Toronto show! The crowd loved it!

I think they are putting on an amazing show so to dig them up for the odd drop in sound appears a bit petty. The Limelight intro is definitely staged and is appropriate bearing in mind the Video preceeding it.
Wont see them now until Milan which is less than 3 weeks away![/quote] Andy
A group of us die hard Rush fans are also going over for the Milan gig. My personal view of the SECC gig is that it was a fantastic performance from (still) the best band on the planet bar none.

took my wife to secc on wednesday as payback for being dragged to robbie williams at hampden last year.... robbie was utter pish .....but my wife really enjoyed rush gig... another convert! superb show... highlights for me were the larger bowl, subdivisions, tom sawyer and of course neal elwood pearts drum solo. for a guy who hates touring he still gives an absolutely faultless performance. heres hoping the best band in the world will grace these shores again, but what memories they have provided over the years. thank you geddy, neil and alex[bold][italic]bold[/italic] [/bold]
