Poor show for our troops
Welcome home. It was not so much the red carpet as the cold shoulder that greeted some 330 troops returning to Britain on Christmas leave after lengthy and dangerous deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Herald reveals today that more than 200 soldiers who had been serving in Afghanistan were made to change out of their uniforms and into civilian clothing on the tarmac at Birmingham International Airport before they could continue their journeys home. Yesterday, we reported that, on Christmas Eve, the flight carrying 130 Wiltshire-based troops home from Iraq was diverted to Prestwick Airport, where the soldiers were left without travel arrangements having been made to take them home.
The common factor in the incidents was RAF Brize Norton, the intended destination in both cases, being closed to aircraft because of fog. It is what these events reveal about the treatment of the troops that is troubling and, from their perspective, insulting. Diversions are not a bolt out of the blue, but the failure of authority to handle these
incidents in a caring and professional manner will serve to harden feelings among soldiers that they are undervalued and taken for granted. No-one seems to know who was responsible for the instruction passed to the troops that they should change out of uniform.
It is not even clear why, although the order appears to date back to the time when the IRA was an active terrorist organisation and service personnel were advised not to make themselves targets by wearing uniform in public. The advice might have made sense then, but a case cannot be made for it at present, when the threat is of a different nature (the suicide bomber). Armed troops in uniform are more likely to reassure the public when there is a security alert. It is not so long since tanks and troops were out in force at Heathrow Airport when there was such an alert. Also, the advice is out of kilter with pronouncements from the government to the effect that communities should turn out in force when the armed forces return to base after a deployment. The balance has shifted in favour of encouraging the public to show support for troops who are overstretched, poorly accommodated, relatively badly paid, insufficiently compensated for wounds and inadequately cared for if combat-stressed.
Soldiers must expect to fight and risk their lives. In return, the military authorities must carry out their side
of the bargain. They have a duty of
care that is codified in the military covenant. Both incidents were relatively minor in themselves but the lack of care and attention shown to soldiers when probably they wanted more than at any time of the year to be with their families seems to highlight a deeper problem about the way our armed forces are viewed and treated.

It is typical of the attitude of Maggie Broon and that numpty Des Browne. They are happy to use and abuse the troops for their own political ends, but they treat them like garbage and even fail to provide them with adequate, working equipment.
These troops should have told whoever ordered them to change on the tarmac to get stuffed, and just marched en masse into the terminal building. I doubt whether any of the jobsworths would have tried to stop them.
Des Browne should do the decent thing and resign, forthwith. He is not fit for purpose.

What a disgusting state of Government handling of this situation, and it must surely be all down to someone at Government level - dare I mention someone called Brown or Browne, either one or both must have the blame of this fiasco laid at their door - preferably accompanied with an obvious request for their resignations - pronto!
An apology is not requested, for, as we know, and have experienced time and time again - far too often, when they consider necessary, but quite meaningless when given, because they will do apologising till the cows come home - it's like 'water off a ducks back' to them - and as it usually doesn't incur any penalties, especially personal financial ones, which it seems, to be the main aims of this pathetic crowd of ‘alleged’ Politicos!
Anything they make an attempt at seems to be way beyond any ability they may have!
'****-ups' - seemingly their main 'Forte!'
They seem to achieve 'failure' almost as though it is a target driven necessity!

The returning troops were not at the airport where they had been expected to land. Therefore not even their families were there to welcome them home. To add insult - and it is very insulting- to ask them to change out of British Army Uniform is beyond understanding.
All troops should be afforded a welcome committee, flags and bunting, minimum on arrival home from any war theatre. They are there as a result of decisions made by our elected representatives. It is our fault that through apathy or a decent opposition that they have their lives put at risk. The least we can do is thank them. Would the airport have been unable to roll out a red carpet for a "celebrity footballer" I suspect not. Where are the newspaper photographs recording this atrocity - so far I have not seen any! Why are the press not there to give these people a little bit of celebrity status to show our appreciation of their sacrifice?

As an American Army Veteran I was Outraged to read this. My hats off to the lads I hope they gave the tower and terminal a proper salute after receiving that outrageous order. What a great retention tool for your services. Makes my blood boil. Well to all of the UK armed services you have your counterparts in the US support. Go get em!

What a disgrace! As a Veteran of 24 years, I have gotten used to the shoddy way ex-service personnel are treated, but to force soldiers returning from "Ops" to change on the tarmac before being allowed into the terminal borders on being criminal.
Convicted prisoners get treated better by this government than our serving personnel!
I remember when I was serving (As an Army "Mover", that charter aircraft had a Diversion Rep on board, equipped with a pad of Rail Warrants, just in case, and the Army District that diversion airfields were duty bound to help out in the event of a diversion.
Obviously this is no longer the case, and the government once again has pinched pennies for designer clothes and public images, rather than carry out their duty of care.
It is time that the "New Labour" government stepped down and a general election was held. They have failed, and any replacement government can only be better than this bunch of clowns.

As an expat and a veteran of the U. S. Army I am outraged to read this article knowing something of the feeling. After all in the past U. S. Military personnel were treated the same way. Fortunately in the U. S. the public supports the troops. What a great way to recruit new personnel and to keep folks in the service. Reading articles like this makes me sick to my stomach. I never thought I would say that I feel shame for my home land.
To all service members in the UK mob remember their are those of us in and out of the UK who thank you for your service and are proud of the job you do! With out you are freedoms might soon be gone.
