Tom Paxton, City Halls, Glasgow
STUART MORRISONJanuary 23 2008

Star Rating: *****

"It's been 43 years since I first came here. I promise I'll keep coming until I get it right." Tom Paxton, one of the great American songwriters, "got it right" a long time ago. This man first played the Newport Folk Festival in 1963, when he was introduced on stage by Pete Seeger. He has toured and recorded ever since.

Robin Bullock, his prodigiously talented accompanist on guitar and mandolin, told us that Paxton had recorded some 57 albums, "give or take a few". The latest of these, Comedians and Angels, formed the basis of this show, with the title track being one of the best songs of the evening. And when he has the likes of The Last Thing on My Mind to call on, you realise that this supremely talented, politically aware, family-oriented man is still right up there with the best in the business.

His voice was as strong as ever as he took aim at the White House in George W Told the Nation, he had the whole room singing Bottle of Wine - and he finished with Ramblin' Boy, on which he duetted with Seeger all those years ago. A marvellously uplifting evening.
