Josh White Jr/Spencer Bohren, Quality Central Hotel
12:54am Monday 21st January 2008
Star rating: *** The outcome of this double bill is a curious combination of history lesson and entertainment - perhaps because both artists have, in later life, become educators as well as performers. Unfortunately, it makes for a slightly stilted dynamic to a musically-engaging show.

Steve Earle, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
12:53am Monday 21st January 2008
Star rating: *** Allison Moorer, the present - and seventh - Mrs Steve Earle, opened Thursday night's show with a pocketful of self-penned tunes, a selection of covers from her new album and a warming rendition of Happy Birthday To You, dedicated to her husband.

Praise of Ben Dorain, City Hall
12:52am Monday 21st January 2008
Star rating: *** Having composed an 80-minute passacaglia for solo piano based on Shostakovich's initials and a concerto entitled The Five Continents presented at the London Proms with himself as pianist, Ronald Stevenson could be expected to celebrate his 80th birthday with something monumental. What he gave us on Saturday was Praise of Ben Dorain, his homage to a mountain, premiered by the BBC SSO and sundry choirs conducted by James Grossmith, chorusmaster of Scottish Opera.

Punch Brothers with The Bills, Old Fruitmarket
12:51am Monday 21st January 2008
Star rating: **** There was an underlying message of "what kept ya?"

Liam Clancy and Danu, Old Fruitmarket
12:50am Monday 21st January 2008
It isn’t every day you find yourself in the presence of greatness, and there was a palpable expectancy in a packed venue as the excellent Archie Fisher introduced Liam Clancy with his band for the evening, Danu.

Lauren MacColl with Maeve MacKinnon
12:11am Monday 21st January 2008
St Andrew's in the Square Star rating: *****
