Highland Spring Final Countdown

On Friday, in Sri Lanka, the decision who hosts the 2014 Commonwealth Games will be made, and to mark the occasion The Herald has teamed-up with the Glasgow’s bid team, and official bid supporters Highland Spring to produce an exclusive videocast.

The online video, presented by The Herald’s athletics correspondent Doug Gillon, examines the key components of the bid, including the proposed stadium developments and lasting legacy the bid team hope can be achieved from staging the Games.

The video features interviews with athlete ambassador Lee McConnell and 2014 bid director Derek Casey, as well as a look back to the last time Scotland hosted the Games; in Edinburgh in 1986.

Highland Spring Andy and jamie Murray

The Murrays uncovered: a behind-the-scenes look at Hugh MacDonald’s exclusive interview with the Murray brothers. The brothers talk about their love of tennis, their sibling rivalry, and their passion for winning. They also reveal how they like to relax off the court and how they do not envy each other in their differing positions in the sport.

Their agreement on this is not compromised by bouts of mutual slagging and a frenetic water fight.

Here we feature one of Scotland's brightest young sports stars, weightlifter Nikki Hamilton, 12, who has been identified as a world-class prospect.

Nikki, of Kilwinning Weightlifting Club, is on schedule to participate in the games and is asked about her hopes for the future by The Herald's award-winning sports writer Doug Gillon.

They discuss the vital importance of water not only in top flight sport but as a basic commodity in communities across the world.

NEWS: Drinks giant Diageo backs Glasgow bid
FrontPage

Just 48 hours before lodging its candidature file in London, the organising committee confirmed a sixth major commercial backer of the city’s bid – global drinks conglomerate Diageo.

The announcement was made at the company’s cooperage in Port Dundas, with the help of Scottish hammer record-holder Shirley Webb.

They join BBC Scotland, Clydesdale Bank, First Group, Highland Spring, and O2, whose overall backing is worth an estimated £1.5m. Major supporters have exclusive access to the Glasgow 2014 brand identity, logo and tartan.

However, the biggest investor in the Games is the Scottish Executive, which has agreed to cover costs 80-20 with the city. Irrespective of the format of the new administration after last week’s elections, it will not affect Glasgow’s bid.

“It has cross-party support, and we have guarantees from all party leaders, who are massively behind it,” said spokesman Rob Shorthouse.

“It would be presumptuous of us to talk to anyone before the shape of the new administration has become clear, but we expect whoever is First Minister will be present in Sri Lanka when we make our final presentation before the vote on November 9.”

Derek Casey, director of Glasgow 2014, said: “Diageo are the latest big name to join the team. Thousands of Scots, companies, and organisations have backed the bid. Working together we can win these Games for Scotland.” Bryan Donaghey, managing director for Diageo Scotland, said: “Diageo is delighted to support the Commonwealth Games bid, not just in financial terms, but also through the huge enthusiasm and encouragement of our 4000 employees across Scotland."

Glasgow’s 600-page bid document travels to London by rail on Tuesday and will be handed over to the Commonwealth Games Federation on Wednesday along with that of Nigerian rivals, Abuja.

It contains all the plans for a Scottish Games, and will arrive at Glasgow Central Station under a uniformed police escort which will include double Commonwealth silver medallist Tom McKean, now a police constable. McKean also won the European 800m title indoors and out, and World indoor gold, plus a record four successive European Cup titles.
