A cycle route through Hendon is to be installed for a trial period of six months.

It will go from the Sunny Gardens Road junction with the Great North Way to Shirehall Lane, at the southern end of Hendon Park, along footpaths already used by pedestrians between Church Road and Queens Road. Signing will be in place along the paths warning pedestrians that cyclists will be using the route.

Residents were concerned it could be a safety hazard to pedestrians, especially families attending Hendon United Synagogue. However, the trial period of six months has been established to try to deal with these concerns.

Hendon councillor Andrew Sherling, speaking at last Wednesday's public works meeting, said: "It's a very narrow road and sometimes people are using wheelchairs which narrows it even more.

"Taking signs out if it's unsuccessful will be expensive and unnecessary. What about trying an alternative route using main roads? If accidents are being caused you could look at it again."

But Councillor Geof Cooke replied: "We should encourage shared use of space and attempt to educate pedestrians and cyclists."

If the cycle path is unsuccessful after six months it will cost £10,000 to remove the signs.
