Following several reports of bogus callers in the Three Valleys Water area, the company is again warning elderly residents of Hertsmere to be on their guard.

Last year the company joined forces with police to warn of the dangers of thieves posing as employees in order to gain entry to houses. And now the same initiatives are to be taken again in the form a leaflet which will be posted to homes, with guidelines on how pensioners can protect themselves and their property.

Three Valleys managing director, Jim McGown, said: "We have strict rules about our employees wearing official uniforms and presenting identity cards when they call. We have a number for people to ring to check their identity - genuine callers will not mind.

"If you have any suspicions to not let the caller in, think before you open the door, trust your instincts and don't become a victim." Anyone who is unsure of a caller claiming to be from Three Valleys Water should telephone 0345 823333.
