Plans to landscape the grounds at Queen's Road cemetery, Thornton Heath, and provide much needed new burial graves get under way this week.

A water feature in the new Garden of Remembrance is currently being created for the cemetery, which opened in 1861.

Following a consultation exercise with local people, plans have been approved to enhance landscaping, create new gardens and historical trails as well as provide more seating, two new entrances and improved security in and around the grounds.

The cemetery has provided a final resting place for some of the borough's famous and infamous characters. These include the victims of the famous Birdhurst Rise poisoning case and James Hobbs JP who, together with his partner in crime, Jabez Balfour, was involved in a £7 million building society scandal.

Information and these and other interesting historical facts about the site are now on display in the grounds on specially provided panels.
