Following your article on the No Mayor campaign, (News Shopper, September 12) I'm writing to support the campaign.
Apparently (according to Lewisham publicity material) the old system of committees has to be changed, by order of central government. In a consultation document Lewisham sets out alternatives, e.g. leader and cabinet, mayor and cabinet, which seem fairly similar. However, if these are the only choices, I believe the directly-elected mayor is the least democratic system.
We have seen council services in Lewisham privatised left, right and centre. Can we honestly say this is an improvement? With less accountability to council taxpayers, services will get worse and this system anywhere could even be open to corruption.
Let's say “No”.
