CONSTRUCTION work on a £25m retail leisure and residential development in Greenwich town centre has begun.

The mixed-use development is being built above the Cutty Sark Docklands Light Railway station in Greenwich.

Covering 130,000 sq ft it will include 55,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, accommodation for 230 students and 24 luxury loft apartments.

Situated above the Cutty Sark station, the site has proved to be a challenging and complicated project for regeneration specialists Centros Miller.

Chairman John Wheeler said: "The project will not only improve the town centre for local people and the growing number of tourists visiting Greenwich, but it has already been spoken of as a blueprint for regeneration projects above public transport links."

Minister of State for Housing Nick Raynsford gave the thumbs-up when he inspected work at the development, which is in partnership with the London Development Agency.

He said the site has stood vacant and derelict for too long .

The development should be completed by January 2002 and will create more than 100 jobs.
