THIS yea's St Albans Bank Holiday Monday carnival already promises to break all records with the biggest Grand Procession for more than a decade starting the day and adventure in the arena later.

With the theme of this year's carnival sponsored by St Albans Observer being 2001 A Space Odyssey, more than 100 vehicles, floats and walkers bringing to life everything from ET to intergalactic missiles will be judged at Bernards Heath before processing through the city centre and down Holywell Hill to Westminster Lodge.

Main arena events during the afternoon bring thrills and jousting to Verulamium with the Knights of the Crusades, featuring two 45-minute spectaculars of medieval mayhem King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and the legend of Richard the Lionheart.

The other bill topper is international high wire artiste George Carlin and his incredible High Tension act without a safety net.

His spectacular performance of skill and courage has been wowing the public for more than 30 years as he performs breathtaking feats 30 feet above the arena.

The carnival is organised by St Albans Round Table who "table" 100 volunteers on the day. Last year's takings of £37,000 were a record, with all profits going to local charities.

There will be plenty for the younger visitors to enjoy from Piccadilly Circus, Punch and Judy and Smartie Artie in the family arena to a wonderful inflatable circus train.

And in keeping with the space theme, they will also enjoy robot Max 2000 and his sidekicks the Dysfunktional Disco Droids with Rocket the Dog.

Look out for Lord Zilch he'll be looking out for you. Marvel at his dexterity as his lightning fingers turn balloons into extra terrestrials, all ready to head for the galaxy.

Tickets are cheaper bought in advance adults £3 instead of £4, family tickets £7.50 instead of £10 from the Tourist Information Centre at the town hall, and Martins in the Quadrant, Marshalswick. For more details on carnival attractions see www.stalbans
